I quite enjoyed this film as well; like you, I know it from the Scorsese World Cinema Project.

Are there any other African films you'd recommend? I'd highly recommend a documentary released in the next volume of the World Cinema project, Trances from Morocco.

Thanks Robert! (Apologies for the slow response, I got covid, woo!) I will definitely be checking Trances out, great rec! I've actually jumped head first into all of the World Cinema Project's and am working my way through each box set, so your rec only adds to my excitement. If I had to recommend just ONE other film from Africa (though there are many greats, so I'm just limiting for the sake of brevity) I'd recommend checking out the film I just posted about: Bamako. I was really surprised at how gripping it was, and thought the marketing didn't indicate what kind of film you were in for. Anyhoo, thanks for popping by!

I hope you're feeling better.

If you have the Criterion Channel I'd recommend two documentaries directed by the pioneering Beninese-Senegalese filmmaker Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Afrique-sur-Seine and Lamb.

I do not. I do have a Substack of my own where I sometimes talk about films, like here: https://walrod.substack.com/p/kino-und-sensucht

Re: World Cinema Project, I'd recommend a 30s Mexican gothic horror called The Phantom of the Monastery.
